Charlotte Whitton

Born: March 8, 1896 Renfrew
Died: January 25, 1975 Ottawa

Known for: Social worker, politician, feminist. Charlotte Whitton is best remembered as Ottawa's flamboyant and outspoken mayor during the 1950s and 1960s. She was in fact Canada's first woman mayor, elected in 1951. Her tenure as mayor was notable for her stormy verbal and, in one celebrated instance, physical battles with hostile male colleagues.

Famous Quotation: “Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.”
